St Joachim 3, California 2

COSTA MESA — St. Joachim opened the Daily Pilot Cup with a pool-play win over California Tuesday.

California went on attack early scoring first midway through the first half with a net shot from the right side.

The St. Joachim Sea Kings quickly regrouped and Kate Lyon crossed a pass to Emily Rodriguez to tie the score.

The Sea Kings defense stiffened with Hannah Sanders, Alexia Hipsher, Jazmin Machuca and Rianna Reimers keeping California out of the goal through most of the game.

St. Joachim got its offense back in gear late in the first half and continued into the second with Lacy Yonkers finding the back of the net two more times with help from Rodriguez, Carly Van Oostendorp and Melissa Machuca.

Kayla Maciel and Fiona Zachary helped to keep the advantage for the Sea Kings later into the game.

California was able to snag one more goal late in the game, but the St. Joachim girls edged California in the end.
