COSTA MESA — There was deja vu at the Daily Pilot Cup Thursday.

The rematch of last year’s silver division finals yielded the same result, as the fifth- and sixth-graders of Harbor View defeated Harbor Day, 3-1, at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.

Both teams, now playing in the gold division of this year’s Daily Pilot Cup, displayed a variety of jaw-dropping plays for the spectators. Harbor View’s Grant Wallace nearly scored on a shot from outside the penalty box that hit the crossbar.

Harbor Day’s lone goal came off the chest of David Karamardian.

“I really liked all the kids that normally don’t play soccer,” Harbor View Coach Patrick Truninger said. “You see them at practice with their friends at school and they are kind of goofing around (but) they showed up on the field and performed today.”

Two of Harbor View’s goals came off the foot of Clint Henderson, who also scored the only goal in the first half. Wallace scored the third goal.

According to Harbor Day’s Coach Shide Soleimany, the team played hard despite being short-handed. She said five of its players were at a track and field meet and couldn’t be here for the rematch.

“Hopefully we’ll have everybody here (the next game),” Soleimany said. “I’ll have a better chance of substituting — giving the guys rest and getting them back on the field and win the next one.”

Harbor Day had a great opportunity to tie the game in the second half on a breakaway, but Harbor View’s goalkeeper Hagen Truninger blocked Evan Schwartz’s shot.

Harbor View responded with a march up Harbor Day’s defense and Henderson scored off a rebound from Harbor Day’s goalkeeper. The team’s third goal was also scored off a rebound.
