COSTA MESA — There was plenty of action on the field Thursday at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex. But off it, the coaches for Carden Hall and Newport Elementary were pretty busy too.

Carden Hall Coach Mike Sanchez guides two teams for the private school. His boys’ third- and fourth-graders got the win against Newport, 4-3, in the silver division. But Newport Coach Lanee Junghans remained proud of her team. Her kids should be proud of her too.

Junghans is coaching six Newport teams at the 10th annual Daily Pilot Cup. She can’t get enough soccer.

But she would be the first to tell you, the week is not about her. It’s about the kids. Her players put up a fight to the last second, scoring a goal just before the final whistle.

That came courtesy of Julian Crane. Nic Rimlinger and Adam Lucas also scored.

“I felt like my boys were amazing,” Junghans said. “They didn’t give up.”

But Carden Hall held off Newport.

Hayden Shock, Sean Waterman and Jack Pritches scored a goal each for Carden Hall.
