COSTA MESA — The offensive fireworks shot off Thursday afternoon. The fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ bronze division match between the Prince of Peace and Davis featured both teams’ strong offenses at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.

The Prince of Peace had a 4-0 lead in the first half, the first two goals from fifth-grader Elizabeth Sturdy, and never looked back as the team defeated Davis 6-2.

“They played real well together as a team and did what we practiced the last couple of weeks. They had a lot of fun,” Prince of Peace Coach Matt Martinez said. “Our goal is for them is to have fun and be good sports. I think they showed that on the field.”

Davis also had a two-goal scorer of its own. Citlaly Gomez, who scored six goals in Davis’ first game, netted the team’s only goals against the Prince of Peace.

“We’re trying really hard and we have a bunch of girls who haven’t played before so I’m really proud of them,” Davis Coach Jennifer Young said. “We have Citlaly who’s awesome in the front — she’s our big kicker. We have Montana (Martin) who’s our starting goalie and she’s really good — she also plays forward — and we have Kelly (Gomez) who’s in midfield and she rips it up and runs all over.”

In hopes for a comeback, Gomez scored Davis’ first goal after she dribbled the ball through Prince of Peace’s defense starting from the midfield.

However, Prince of Peace quickly responded with a goal of its own with fifth-grader Kristen Nelson’s shot and took away the momentum Davis had from its first score.

Prince of Peace’s other goals were by sixth-graders Cheyenne Savela and Paige Captain and fifth-grader Olivia Khoury.

Both coaches added the Daily Pilot Cup has been a great experience.

“For me it’s my third year of coaching and it’s been a lot of fun and we appreciate the Daily Pilot for doing it,” Martinez said. “It brings a lot of people together and I think it’s a great thing.”
