What comes next after winning your first league title in 26 years?

A nice little postseason run, of course.

The Edison High softball team edged Foothill, 5-4, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs at home Tuesday. The Chargers will play at Riverside Poly in the quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m. today, trying to extend what is believed to be their longest playoff run since that 1983 season when they won their previous Sunset League crown.

“We did really good [against Foothill],” Edison Coach Kendra Rosales said. “Our defense was just working. Defense was what kept us in the game; Foothill can hit the ball.”

So can Edison senior Jordan Malavar. She crushed hit a three-run home run for the Chargers (22-5), who led, 3-1, after the first inning. They added two more in the bottom of the fourth, one of those coming on a Katie Shinrock RBI single, then held their collective breath.

Foothill loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. But after Knights pitcher Anna Avalos singled to left to score a run, Edison left fielder Casey Africano gunned down the runner at third, Jessica Hall applying the tag to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Allyson Hecht earned the victory for Edison.

“She’s been pitching a lot lately,” Rosales said. “She struggled a little bit today, but she’s a champion. She kept her composure.”

Next comes the game at Riverside Poly today. After two home games to open the playoffs, Rosales said her team is “excited and anxious.”

“We’re going to be on the road,” she said. “It’s going to show us a lot about our character.”

?Defending CIF champion Ocean View was upset by La Quinta, 2-1 in eight innings Tuesday, ending the Seahawks’ season in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

Ocean View was again the top seed in Division IV this season. The Seahawks had advanced to the second round by beating Cabrillo of Lompoc, 6-0.

The Golden West League champion Seahawks finished 23-6.

?Marina fell in the first round of the Division I playoffs, 4-2, to Pacifica of Oxnard on May 21.

Pacifica jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings against the Vikings, who were co-Sunset League champs.

“They put pressure on us and we couldn’t recover,” Edison Coach Shelly Luth said. “The kids made mistakes, panicked, and we’ve made those plays all year long. We had a really-high quality team this year ... you just have to be ready. We were caught off-guard and it happens.”

The Vikings finished the year 22-6.
