COSTA MESA — These two girls’ soccer teams met at a younger age, a different time two years ago.

Things sure don’t change whenever Andersen and Pegasus compete for a Daily Pilot Cup gold division championship.

The two played Sunday afternoon in another hard-fought match. And Andersen outlasted Pegasus again, winning on penalty kicks, 4-1, after the fifth- and sixth-grade gold division title was tied, 2-2, in regulation.

Sixty minutes decided in about five minutes, a devastating way to lose a final at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.

Andersen won its third straight title in the fifth- and sixth grade level’s premier division.

The last time these two squared off in a gold division final, Pegasus gave Andersen a freebie, tapping in an own-goal in the 24th minute. The difference in the third- and fourth-grade match two years ago was one goal.

The second time around, goalkeeper Maddie Musselman proved to the difference for Andersen.

Musselman stopped two shots during penalties, allowing the Dolphins to celebrate after Tori English converted Andersen’s fourth consecutive penalty kick.

“Sort of nervous,” Musselman said she felt until she remembered last year’s final.

Musselman was in a similar situation while playing for Andersen’s third- and fourth-grade team in the gold division.

The pressure back then was even more intense.

Andersen attempted to win its seventh straight championship in the third- and fourth-grade level’s top division. Musselman came up huge, blocking four of Carden Hall’s five penalty kicks, as the Dolphins won.

Musselman wasn’t even the keeper in regulation then, just played the position during penalties.

Against Pegasus, she was the keeper the entire time.

Only Shelby Brown kicked a ball past Musselman, twice in regulation and once during penalties.

Brown rallied Pegasus late in the second half, scoring twice on free kicks to tie the match at 2-2.

In the 49th minute, Brown took a shot from the top of the box after Andersen was called for a foul. She found the upper right corner of the net.

Two minutes later, Brown took advantage of an Andersen handball outside the box. From the left side, she snuck a ball through, giving Pegasus a shot for revenge.

That’s all Brown wanted, payback.

“We never gave up,” she said. “We showed that we were in it to win it and we almost had them.”

In Brown’s final year, she fell short to Andersen again.

Coach Rick Brown is just proud how Pegasus battled back after Brynn Motal and Caroline Bethel gave Andersen a 2-0 lead in the first half.

“To get down to a team that’s that good and that deep in talent, and for our girls to come back from a [2-0 deficit], to me that was the highlight of the tournament for me,” the coach said. “We really kind of showed what kind of girls we had.”
