Laguna still looking for great performance

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team got a second chance, and the Breakers want to take advantage of it.

After losing in the CIF Southern Section Division II semifinals, the Breakers are the second-seeded team in the inaugural CIF Southern California Regional Division III tournament.

Laguna Beach swept past visiting Clovis North in the first round of the SoCal Regional, 25-10, 25-21, 25-19, on Tuesday.

The Breakers played host to No. 3-seeded Salesian in a semifinal Thursday night after press time. If Laguna won that match, it will play in the Division III title match Saturday at 3 p.m. at Capistrano Valley High.

Junior Travis Woloson had a team-high 15 kills against Clovis North, while Scottie Chapel had seven and Robbie McKnight and Cooper Gwaltney added six each.

But Coach Lance Stewart wasn’t really satisfied with Tuesday’s win. He said he’s still looking for a complete match out of the Breakers (24-5).

“In the first game, I thought we played fairly decent,” Stewart said.

“Then I think we decided we could beat them, and we didn’t play with the same type of consistency. I still think we have a great match in us.”

Stewart said he’s happy for the chance to keep playing after losing in CIF, especially against teams with similar enrollments. For the Southern California Regionals, Division III schools are those that have 1,200 students or less.

“It’s my belief that this a truer indication of a championship,” Stewart said.

“I think when you’re going for a championship, you need an even playing field.”
