BREAKING NEWS UPDATE
A body that washed ashore at 2:15 p.m. today at West Street beach is believed to be that of a man who jumped off a cliff at Tablerock Beach around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Jason Kravetz said.
The body was found in the surfline, about an eighth mile north of where the man jumped in, by a group of teenagers who were on the beach, Kravetz said. The teens went into the water and brought the body ashore. They then notified lifeguards, who called Laguna Beach police to the scene, Kravetz said.
An extensive search Sunday evening for the man was unsuccessful. The search began around 6:15 p.m. and ended at nightfall, around 8 p.m. The search resumed at 6 a.m. as divers and rescue vessels combed the coastline.
The man, 22, reportedly jumped off a cliff at Tablerock Beach. Another man jumped in to rescue him, but came ashore shortly afterward, according to police records.
The missing swimmer was identified as William Barrientos, 22, of Lake Forest. The identity of the body will be made by the Orange County Coroner’s office.
