Newport Hills defeats Green Valley
Even an atypical steady June rain in southern California, a number of sick swimmers and a strong opponent could not derail the Newport Hills Swim Team on June 20th when they hosted the Green Valley Dolphins in a South Coast Swim Conference dual meet at their home pool. On a day full of strong individual performances by swimmers on both teams, with one pool record shattered and another tied, the Newport Hills Killer Whales defeated the Dolphins 715.50 to 615.50.
The Killer Whales were led by their 7-8 Boys, who took first and second place in the Medley and Freestyle Relays, as well as first, second and third place honors in the individual 25 yard and 50 yard Freestyle events, the 25 yard Breaststroke, the 25 yard Butterfly and the 25 yard Backstroke. Their 11-12 Boys Killer Whales were very similar as they swam to first place wins in both the Medley and Freestyle Relays, and they were first, second and third in the individual 50 yard Freestyle, the 50 yard Butterfly, the 50 yard Backstroke and the 100 yard Individual Medley. Both the Under 6 Boys and the 9-10 Boys for Newport Hills were first in the Medley and Freestyle Relays, as well as all the individual events in their age group.
Four Newport Hills swimmers were three-time winners in individual events----Speedy Laster won the 25 yard Freestyle, the 25 yard Breaststroke and the 25 yard Backstroke in the Under 6 division, Chloe Harbilas took first in the 25 yard Freestyle, the 25 yard Butterfly and the 50 yard Freestyle for the 7-8 Girls, Hollace Barden swam to first place finishes in the 100 yard Freestyle, the 50 yard Butterfly and the 100 yard Individual Medley for the 15-18 Girls and Taylor Cortens earned the blue ribbon in the 50 yard Butterfly, the 50 yard Backstroke and the 100 yard Individual Medley for the 11-12 Boys---tying the Pool Record of 1:07.72 in the 100 yard Individual Medley originally set in 2007 by Killer Whale Blake Motal.
Green Valley also had two swimmers who were three-time individual event winners----Carly Perri in the 11-12 Girls was first in the 50 yard Freestyle, the 50 yard Butterfly and the 100 yard Individual Medley, and Cory Nguyen won the 50 yard Freestyle, the 50 yard Butterfly and the 50 yard Backstroke for the 13-14 Boys.
There were three Killer Whale two-time winners in individual events----Connor McManigal (25 yard Freestyle and 25 yard Backstroke) and Jake Bays (25 yard Butterfly and 50 Yard Freestyle) for the 7-8 Boys and Henry Wilde (25 yard Butterfly and 100 yard Individual Medley) in the 9-10 Boys, and there were four two-time individual event winners for the Dolphins----Jacquelyn Harris (25 yard Butterfly and 50 yard Backstroke) and Lauren Wong (50 yard Breaststroke and 100 yard Individual Medley) in the 9-10 Girls, Jennifer Schulman (50 yard Butterfly and 100 yard Individual Medley) in the 13-14 Girls and Tony Morelli (50 yard Breaststroke and 100 yard Individual Medley) in the 13-14 Boys.
Individual event winners for Newport Hills were: Claire Eusey (25 yard Freestyle), Georgia Salvino (25 yard Breaststroke) and Lauren Hughes (25 yard Butterfly) in the Under 6 Girls, Hayes Wueste (25 yard Butterfly) in the Under 6 Boys, Sophie Wallace (25 yard Breaststroke) in the 7-8 Girls, Wyatt Genc (25 yard Breaststroke) in the 7-8 Boys, JT Russell (50 yard Freestyle), Rourke Funke (50 yard Breaststroke) and Morgan Cortens (50 yard Backstroke) in the 9-10 boys, Brianna Daboub (50 yard Breaststroke) and Natalie Wilde (50 yard Backstroke) in the 11-12 Girls, Brett Greenlee (50 yard Freestyle) and Danny Robertson (50 yard Breaststroke) in the 11-12 Boys, Cassidy Papa (50 yard Freestyle) in the 13-14 Girls, Lesley Kaczmarek (50 yard Backstroke) in the 15-18 Girls and Justin Papa (100 yard Freestyle) and Derek Roadcap (50 yard Butterfly) in the 15-18 Boys.
Madelyn Harris (Under 6 Girls 25 yard Backstroke), Cassie Koger (7-8 Girls 25 yard Backstroke), Samantha Soriano (9-10 Girls 50 yard Freestyle), Anh Huynh (13-14 Girls 50 yard Breaststroke), Merri Lightbody (13-14 Girls 50 yard Backstroke), Amanda Thompson (15-18 Girls 50 yard Breaststroke), Joshua Kloppenburg (15-18 Boys 50 yard Breaststroke), Nicholas Lightbody (15-18 Boys 50 yard Backstroke) and Lyndon Tran (15-18 Boys 100 yard Individual Medley) were all individual event winners for Green Valley, however the big swim of the day for the Dolphins was the new pool record of 2:04.53 in the 13-14 Girls Medley Relay set by Merri Lightbody, Anh Huynh, Jennifer Schulman and Jennifer Lightbody, breaking the old pool record set in 2006 of 2:04.69 by the Harbor View foursome of McAdams, Van Hiel, Berry and Money.
The Newport Hills Killer Whales will participate in the South Coast Swim Conference Relay Finals this Saturday, June 27th at Corona del Mar High School, beginning at 9 AM. This meet includes all members of the Conference----Greenbrook Gators, Green Valley Dolphins, Harbor View Dolphins, Lake Forest Dolphins, Newport Hills Killer Whales and Pacific Sands Penguins.
