Seahawks looking for groove

The Ocean View High boys’ basketball team went 1-3 during summer play at the prestigious Crespi tournament over the weekend. And that’s OK with Coach Jim Harris.

“No one ever asks you what your summer record is,” Harris said.

But the Seahawks, who advanced to the CIF state championship game for the first time in March, did get valuable experience in the games. The CIF Southern Section Division IV-A champions defeated host Crespi of Encino but fell to Santa Margarita, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley.

They were playing without projected starters in guards Anthony Brown (at an NBA camp) and Aaron Delgado (baseball trip), while guard Avery Johnson suffered a wrist injury Saturday and was held out of Sunday’s games.

Harris said Brown will soon be taking unofficial visits to Arizona and Arizona State.

The absences gave other players plenty of run, and there was at least one game — Simi Valley — where Ocean View didn’t hold a late lead. But again, it was OK with Harris, whose team has already played 12 games this summer.

“It wasn’t really a tournament,” Harris said. “You just play four games. It was really good competition.”
