A Los Angeles teenager died after being struck by a car during a road rage-incited fight on Beach Boulevard on Friday evening, authorities said.

Huntington Beach police received a call at about 7:01 p.m. Friday about a fight on the east side of Beach Boulevard. Additional callers said one of the men in the fight had been struck by an unrelated vehicle.

People on the scene told police that three vehicles traveling north on Beach Boulevard “ultimately became involved in a ‘road rage’-type confrontation,” a police report said.

Witnesses said several men from the three vehicles then began fighting on the side of the road, when one of the subjects was struck by a vehicle, authorities said.

Joel Edwardo Sanchez, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release. The northbound vehicle that hit Sanchez was not involved in the confrontation.

One of the three vehicles involved fled the scene, but was stopped by Huntington Beach police offers. All subjects involved were detained for questioning about the incident. Everyone was later released except for a 17-year-old male, who is now in juvenile hall facing charges of second-degree murder, Sgt. Aaron Smith said.

The northbound lanes of Beach Boulevard were closed between Talbert and Slater avenues for a short time.

Huntington Beach police detectives are still investigating Friday’s events. Police ask anyone with information to call (714) 375-5066.
