Kids’ art at Susi Q Senior Center

The Susi Q Senior and Laguna Beach Community Center are exhibiting art by children from the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

“Touched by Art” includes a variety of styles and media produced under the direction of Emily Murray, the club’s art director.

Students in the show range in age from 5 to 15.

Hospital Auxiliary awards scholarships

The South Coast Medical Center Auxiliary recently awarded scholarships to nine South Orange County graduating high school seniors.

Annika Dries, who recently graduated from Laguna Beach High School, received the $2,500 Dr. Codini Scholarship award.

Richa Patel, Megan Stone, Janine Tran, Rembrandt Vandruff, Nancy Nguyen, and Vyvyan Bui of Aliso Niguel High School and Taylor Mosher and Jeffrey Cohen of Dana Hills High School each received $2,000 for college related expenses.

The scholarship money will allow students to pursue their medical career aspirations at the college level.

Spike Jackson graduates with class

Schuyler “Spike” Jackson obtained his Laguna Beach High School diploma a few days before graduation ceremonies. He will be attend Humbolt State in the fall and is working in Montana this summer.

He recently attained Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts after completing a project to make new signs for the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club. Over the last few summers, Spike was a Laguna Beach lifeguard and worked at the Sawdust Festival.

SchoolPower grants promote learning

The SchoolPower Endowment Foundation will award Teacher Grants to teachers and for teaching enhancement purchases for next school year, after the committee approved all of the top priority grant requests submitted, including grants to benefit every school site and grade level.

Laguna Beach High received $14,295, which will pay for microscopes, instructional technology for U.S. and world history, weight room upgrades, school spirit T-shirts and graphic arts digital cameras.

The grant includes $3,000, which will also benefit girls who want to learn everything from cooking to dance.

Thurston Middle School received $13,500, including $3,000 that will allow every student in Paul Matheson’s social studies class to have a hand-held remote that allows instant feedback, surveys and quizzes.

A $3,500 grant went to science and math teacher Kara Smith for electronic data collectors.

Other grants included support for Mandarin classes and Outdoor Science School.

Top of the World and El Morro elementary schools were awarded $15,605 combined, and will benefit computer, art and sea science programs. The schools received $5,250 for reading and writing programs.

The Community Learning Center received $3,660 for its MIND Institute Math program, which will provide laptops for every student.

Native American camp starts Monday

Crystal Cove State Park will host Jacque Nunez, tribal descendant of the Acjachemen Nation, for the third annual “Indian Camp,” to take place Monday to July 10.

The camp is open to children ages 5 to 11.
