On Theater: Playhouse offers summer youth theater classes

Ever wonder how those professional actors on the Laguna Playhouse stage got their start? Chances are from summer classes like those being offered by the theater this month.

Beginning Monday, the playhouse’s Youth Theater will be holding four two-week sessions for those ages 7 through 18 at the theater’s Production Center in Laguna Hills.

The first of these, Monday through July 17, is Kids on Broadway, a musical theater workshop for people aged 9 to 12. This will be a revue of songs, scenes and monologues with emphasis on acting, music and movement. Students will learn how to present a song or monologue and will work on group numbers with professionals in the field. The workshop — under the tutelage of Kathy Harris, Rachel Green and Vanessa Schneller — will culminate in a performance at 1 p.m. July 17.

In the Acting Ensemble class for children 7 and 8 years of age, scheduled from July 20 to 31, students will “explore self expression through playful exercises and rehearsal in preparation for their showcase July 31 at 11 a.m.,” according to instructor Sari Rose Poll.

A Teen Acting workshop, also beginning Monday, is planned with Jane Hillary in charge. This is described as “a crash course for teens that are looking for an exceptional summer workshop. Evening classes (6:30 to 9 p.m.) leave plenty of time to go to the beach or have a job.”

The curriculum includes acting, improvisation and building auditioning skills, leading to a final performance at 8 p.m. July 17. Finally, there’s Voiced Unheard for ages 13 to 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 20 to 31, also taught by Poll. Students will “explore a variety of creative arts including acting, improv, movement, voice, writing and visual art.” This class will culminate in a showcase of original pieces based on a social issue decided by the class.

Summer classes will be daily, Monday through Friday, and all will include showcases or demonstrations for family and friends.

Fees range from $300 to $550 and information on enrollment may be obtained from Kelly Herman at (949) 497-2787, ext. 230 or at www.lagunaplayhouse.com.
