Little league titles could be decided Tuesday

The Ocean View Little League All-Stars are the ones in an enviable position, but the Huntington Valley All-Stars are going to try to do something about that when the teams play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Huntington Valley fields.

Ocean View, managed by Tod Minato, needs to win just once to claim the District 62 title in the Little League division for the second straight year. After surviving a tough 3-2 decision over Seaview in the semifinals, Ocean View has yet to lose a game.

Huntington Valley is coming off a 7-0 victory over Robinwood last Wednesday. It was the second straight day HVLL had defeated Robinwood, a team it had lost to, 6-1, earlier in the tournament to drop into the losers’ bracket.

Huntington Valley Manager Rick Johnson said Pierson Loska had three hits in the semifinal win, while Jake McFetridge and Tyler Murray also had good hits.

Sean O’Toole pitched the shutout, and Kyle Coburn also helped the cause, turning a double play with the bases loaded and one out.

“It was a well-played game,” Johnson said. “We didn’t hit any home runs. We hit singles; we just tried to put the ball in play.”

Huntington Valley now needs to top Ocean View twice for the title. An “if necessary” game would be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the same venue.

“It’s going to be a tough match,” Johnson said.

Also Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the HVLL fields, Ocean View will play Robinwood in the 9/10 District 62 final. Neither team has lost yet in the double-elimination tournament, so the series is best two-of-three; subsequent games would be played Wednesday and (if necessary) Thursday.

Huntington Valley has advanced to Wednesday’s title game in the 10/11 All-Stars bracket. It will play either Ocean View or Costa Mesa National, who play Tuesday. Either of those teams would have to beat Huntington Valley twice; the district finals start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Westminster Little League fields.

Seaview also faces Westminster in the Junior Division final, set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster.

Seaview, which has one loss, would have to top undefeated Westminster twice for the title. An “if necessary” game would be Wednesday.

District winners advance to the Section 10 tournament. Ocean View hosts the 9/10 tournament, which begins July 18.
