Former Newport Beach Mayor and City Councilwoman Evelyn Hart was presented the John Crean Book of Golden Deeds award by the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor.

The Book of Golden Deeds was first awarded in 1917 by the National Exchange Club, and the Newport Harbor club has been awarding it for the past 19 years, according to Garry Twinkle, awards chairman. Exchange Club member John Crean’s name was added to the title of the award upon his passing several years ago in recognition of his community service.

Club member Ed Romeo, who had served as president of the Friends of OASIS, said Evelyn Hart had volunteered to replace him when his term was up. During her year as president, Hart headed up the successful $10-million capital campaign to build the new OASIS facility, which is under construction.

Club member Wally Ziglar defined Hart as “Love and Service” as he had worked with her on several community efforts. Hart served on the Newport Beach City Council for 16 years after she served on the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission for four years.

Club member Rick Taylor said he was so impressed with Hart’s help (when he ran for City Council) and personality that he named his third child “Evelyn.”

In accepting the award, Hart noted that she traveled a lot as a child, and when she landed in the Harbor area she embraced the community and has enjoyed the opportunity to serve. In the audience and supporting Hart was former Newport Beach Police Chief Pete Gross, a fellow OASIS member. Congratulations, Evelyn, on a well-deserved honor!

WORTH REPEATING

Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council… “I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacation with better care than they do their lives. Perhaps that is because escape is easier than change.”
