CdM strong in 18s

It’s safe to say that Corona del Mar High is well-represented in the boys’ 18 singles division of the 20th annual Balboa Bay Club Junior Tennis Tournament.

Three of the top of four seeds features two Sea Kings and a CdM alumnus in the event also known as the War by the Shore Tournament at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Chris Damion, a recent graduate of CdM, is the top seed. He plays against Joshua Kameel of Los Angeles today at 5 p.m. in the Round of 32.

Shane Korber, who will be a CdM junior in the fall, is the No. 3 seed. He had a bye Monday and will play against Santa Ana’s Trevor Zaret today at 5 p.m.

Ryan Peyton, a CdM senior-to-be and the No. 4 seed, had a bye Monday and will play today at 6:30 p.m.

Pierce Stemler of Newport Beach defeated Jameson Lee of Rancho Santa Margarita, 6-2, 6-3. Stemler will face No. 12-seeded Jordan Brown of San Diego today at 6:30 p.m.

Dante Saleh of Newport Beach beat Alex Shakas of Huntington Beach, 6-0, 6-0. Saleh will face Greg Paik today at 6:30 p.m.

David Fink of Newport Coast advanced after Justin Sinclair of Sherman Oaks withdrew because of injury.

Caleb Baer of Los Angeles beat CJ Chomeau of Newport Beach, 6-4, 6-3.

.In boys’ 10 singles, Newport Beach resident Andre Saleh advanced to the semifinals. He got past Anaheim’s Scott Nguyen, who withdrew because of injury in the quarterfinals. Saleh is playing against an opponent to be determined on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Mark Tenney, a Newport Beach resident, plays against Govind Nanda of Redlands today at 6:30 p.m. in the Round of 16. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face Russell Lam Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

.In boys’ 12 singles, Newport Beach resident Austin Di Giulio, the No. 2 seed, will play today at 12:30 p.m. in the Round of 16 against Alex Kuperstein of Palm Desert.

Newport Beach resident Bjorn Hoffmann advanced to the Round of 16 after beating No. 7-seeded Koki Takabatake, an Irvine resident who retired in third set because of injury.

Hoffman was leading the third set, 1-0 and won the first set, 6-4, and dropped the second set, 3-6.

Tyle Gaede of Corona del Mar lost in the Round of 32 Monday, losing to Sam Bellensen, 1-6, 4-6.

William Tenney of Newport Beach also lost in the Round of 32, falling to Lake Forest’s Even Kittelsen, 3-6, 2-6.

.In boys’ 14 singles, Corona del Mar’s Alastair Hurry will play against No. 9-seeded Micah Lyle of Encinitas in the Round of 32 today at 12:30 p.m.

Newport Beach’s Stephen Tenney plays against Trevor Brown of San Diego today at 9:30 a.m.

Brown defeated Newport Coast’s Eric Magliarditi, 6-0, 6-1.

Newport Coast resident Preston Kim plays against Temecula’s Troy Chavez today at 12:30 p.m.

Garrett Rucker of Newport Beach takes on Trent Dickey of Temecula today at 12:30 p.m.

Nick Cord of Corona del Mar defeated Clay Hardy of Utah, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 32.

Cord will face Hank Workman, the No. 4 seed of Thousand Oaks today at 12:30 p.m.

.In boys’ 16 singles, Joel Ishii of Newport Beach will have his hands full.

Ishii will play against No. 1 seed Julian Ruffin of Irvine today at 3:30 p.m. in the Round of 32. Ishii beat Joseph Saarem of Reno, Nev., 6-2, 6-4, Monday.

Newport Beach’s Alex Carlis beat Alexander Morrison of Newport Beach, 7-6, 6-4. Carlis will face No. 5-seeded Jaime Soliz of Santa Ana today at 8 a.m.

Jason Cernius of Newport Beach lost to Brandon Pohl of Mission Viejo, 3-6, 1-6.

Costa Mesa resident Tracy Beblie, the No. 8 seed, who had a bye Monday will play today at 8 a.m. against Irvine’s Gage Brymer.

Corona del Mar’s Ismaen Aboubakare defeated Newport Beach’s Troy Arnold, 6-1, 6-4. Aboubakare will play against No. 9-seeded Patrick Lipscomb of Irvine today at 3:30 p.m.

Caleb Kim of Newport Beach also advanced after beating Santa Ana’s Joseph Zaret, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.

Orange’s Eric Wilson beat Costa Mesa’s Alexander Adams, 6-3, 6-1.

Newport Coast’s Zach Williams was also eliminated after losing to Irvine’s Matthew Urrutia, 6-3, 6-1.

Newport Beach’s Zach Haber also lost, falling to Kenichiro Oishi, 0-6, 2-6.

Riley Patton of Newport Beach advanced after Anthony Kwik withdrew because of illness. Patton will play against Nicholas Spelta of Palos Verdes Estates today at 8 a.m.

.In girls’ 10 singles, Newport Coast’s Jenna Moustafa, the No. 2 seed, received a bye Monday and will play today at 9:30 a.m. against Upland’s Allison Torres in the quarterfinals.

Fountain Valley’s Hanh Pham beat Newport Beach’s Emily Labbe, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 16.

.In girls 12 singles, Riley Gerdau of Newport Beach will play against Lauren Mahdi of Laguna Niguel today at 3:30 p.m. in the Round of 16.

Costa Mesa resident Anna Radeva, the No. 4 seed, will play against Justine Huang of Ladera Ranch today at 3:30 p.m.

Temecula’s Jessica Anzo beat Corona del Mar’s Robin Caston, 6-0, 6-0.

Dana Point’s Alexis Coglitore beat Corona del Mar’s Siena Sharf, 6-0, 6-0.

.In girls’ 14 singles, Newport Beach’s McKenzie Purcifull will play against Nicole Scotten of Palos Verdes Estates in the Round of 32 today at 11 a.m.

Afaf Moustafa of Newport Coast defeated Corona del Mar’s Madeline Hayward, 7-5, 6-2. Moustafa will play against No. 3-seeded Caroline Kolin today at 11 a.m.

Blake Bakkila of Newport Beach defeated Upland’s Lauren Torres, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Bakkila will play against Lexie Buttle of Surfside today at 11 a.m.

Costa Mesa’s Annika Hall will play against No. 5-seeded Hilary West of Simi Valley today at 11 a.m.

Temecula’s Emma Arenas defeated Kate Knight of Newport Beach, 6-0, 6-3, in the Round of 64.

Natalie Cernius of Newport Beach retired because of injury against Sabine Ludwig of Capistrano Beach.

Laguna Niguel’s Jessica Murphy beat Jessica Babaknia of Newport Beach, 6-1, 6-3.

Irvine’s Nicole Millado defeated Ellen Labbe of Newport Beach, 6-0, 6-0.

Millado will play against Newport Beach’s Olivia Dajee, the No. 7 seed today at 12:30 p.m.

Allison Ishii beat fellow Newport Beach resident Erica Archie, 6-2, 6-2. Ishii will face No. 2-seeded Camille Deleon of La Mirada today at 12:30 p.m.

.In girls’ 16 singles, Emily Altieri of Corona del Mar defeated Lisa Berger of Laguna Beach, 6-0, 6-4. Altieri will play against top-seeded Beatrice Rosen of Manhattan Beach in the Round of 32 today at 2 p.m.

Savannah Thies of Newport Coast also advanced after Alta Loma’s Alyssa Penner withdrew because of injury. Thies will play against Laura Kaufman of Huntington Beach today at 2 p.m.

Hannah Gross of Newport Coast advanced after Haley Moss of Laguna Beach withdrew because of injury. Gross will play against No. 4-seeded Ariel Aung of Rancho Santa Margarita today at 2 p.m.

Sami Rekoon of Newport Coast advanced because of a no-show. Rekoon will play against Irvine’s Nassim Radmehr, the No. 13 seed, today at 2 p.m.

Newport Beach resident Kalika Slevcove, the No. 12 seed defeated Jessica Yi of Newport Coast, 6-0, 6-0. Slecove will play against Aislin Elkin of Laguna Beach today at 8 a.m. Elkin beat Sasha Hausmann of Newport Coast, 6-2, 6-4.

Rebecca Arnold of Newport Beach beat Sin Ting Lau, 6-1, 6-0 to advance. Arnold will face No. 8-seeded Sara Zargham of Torrance today at 8 a.m.

Jessica Beyer of Newport Beach beat Alexi Kim of Newport Coast, 6-1, 6-0. Beyer will play against No. 15-seeded Samantha Stalder of Costa Mesa today at 2 p.m.

Stalder defeated Fullerton’s Krystal Hernandez, 6-2, 6-2.

Newport Beach resident Caroline Beck beat Sarah Assar of Newport Coast, 6-0, 6-0. Beck will play against No. 6-seeded Alexis Rae Valenzuela of West Covina today at 9:30 a.m.

Claudia Park of Ladera Ranch beat Corona del Mar’s Catherine Keligian, 6-3, 6-0. Park will play against Newport Beach resident Cynthia Waterman, the No. 14 seed, today at 8 a.m. Waterman advanced after Mackenzie Ludlow of Corona del Mar withdrew because of illness.

.In girls’ 18 singles, Kate Duddy of Newport Beach will play against Mayci Jones of Coto de Caza in the Round of 32 today at 5 p.m.

Kelli Feeley of Corona del Mar High will play against Kala Johnson of Huntington Beach today at 8 a.m.

Megan Chomeau of Newport Beach advanced after Santa Barbara’s Hayley Galitzer withdrew. Chomeau will play against No. 4-seeded Jamie Raney of Murrieta today at 5 p.m.

Neda Ghassemi of Corona del Mar will play against No. 8-seeded Tory Parravi of San Diego today at 5 p.m.

Karen Ishii of Corona del Mar High was a no-show in her match against Santa Ana’s Melissa Huang.

Laguna Niguel’s Laura Wilke beat recent Corona del Mar High graduate Danielle Kaiden, 6-4, 7-5.

Fullerton’s Lea Lynn Yen defeated Corona del Mar’s Kelsey Davis, 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles will also be played starting today.
