Newport teams are top seeds

Newport Harbor High boys’ and girls’ water polo teams will have the proverbial bullseye on their backs during the California State High School Championships which begin today and end Sunday in Orange County.

Both teams are seeded first in their respective 32-team tournament.

The Newport Harbor boys open against Laguna Beach today at noon at the Sailors’ pool. The Corona del Mar boys lead their group. They play on the road against Capistrano Valley at its pool at noon.

The Newport Harbor girls will start against Clovis at Villa Park today at 2 p.m. The CdM girls are No. 2 in their group, opening against San Marcos at 3 p.m. at CdM.

The boys’ championship game will be at Newport Harbor on Sunday at 3 p.m., while the girls’ final is at the same time at CdM’s pool.

LOTT COMING TO NEWPORT BEACH

Ronnie Lott, an NFL Hall of Famer, will make a special appearance at the grand opening of Dick’s Sporting Goods at Fashion Island Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The day-long celebration will begin at 9 a.m., when wristbands will be handed out to the first 250 people, one per person, to meet Lott at 1 p.m.

Giveaways will begin at 9 a.m. while supplies last and visitors can register to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Dick’s is located across from the Barnes & Noble, in a new building adjacent to Atrium Court.

Lott, who recorded 63 interceptions to go with five touchdowns in his 14-year career, was a key player in the 49ers’ four Super Bowl championships. Known for his hard-hitting style, Lott, a former USC star, earned 10 Pro Bowl invitations.
