Hot dog? You can get those anywhere...

From fair-food staples such as corn dogs and lemonade to everything-but-the-kitchen-sink fried items, fairgoers should not be let down when the dinner bell tolls at the 2009 Orange County Super Fair.

Taking a stroll through the many food booths on the fair grounds, one might be overwhelmed with the temptations of old favorites. Rows of corn on the cob lined up on the grill, giant turkey drumsticks and hot dogs might trick the average fairgoer into a comfortable, predictable dish. The real treats, however, require a little searching and a little courage.

Known for its fried Twinkies and fried frog legs, Chicken Charlie’s has added a few new items to the menu. This year’s attendees can try the new “zucchini weeni,” a hot dog on a stick wrapped in a zucchini skin that is deep fried, as well as the fried s’more, a deep-fried twist on the campfire classic, topped with chocolate drizzle and powdered sugar. Chocolate-covered bacon is another new culinary adventure that adds a frozen salty-but-sweet treat to traditional fair cuisine.

So, instead of heading straight for the comfort food at this year’s fair, be adventurous — grab a bite and find a new favorite.
