BREAKING NEWS: Historic post office on cut list

Post offices in downtown Huntington Beach and in Fountain Valley are on a list of 677 national locations that the United States Postal Service indicated it may close due to lack of funds.

The historic downtown Huntington Beach post office, at 316 Olive Ave. near Main Street, is the only Surf City location on the list.

However, a location named as the Fountain Valley post office — but noted in the record as being in Santa Ana — also is on the list.

The only standalone post office in Fountain Valley is at 17227 Newhope Street. A second location in a Hallmark store at 18030 Brookhurst St. also offers post office services.

The list was provided Thursday to a House of Representatives subcommittee that is holding a hearing about the future of mail delivery, following the rapid decline of postal mail usage due to the advent of Internet technology.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that sources claim only about 200 of the locations would likely be closed.
