A 17-year-old local boy who died after falling off the roof of a moving vehicle Friday night is being remembered for his many talents and accomplishments.

Christopher Michael Hernandez II, 17, of Huntington Beach, was a guitar-playing Honor Roll student at Servite High School and would have been a senior this year.

“Always humble, always treating others with respect and kindness, Chris graced Servite with his intelligence, determination and musical talent. He was a young man of many accomplishments; an Eagle Scout, an excellent student, and a gifted musician. He played bass for the Servite Jazz Band and Campus Ministry Music Team. His love of music and the Lord brought beauty to every liturgy,” Servite administrators said in a release.

Christopher was riding on the roof of a 2006 Nissan Altima, driven by another 17-year-old boy, on Brannen Drive on Friday evening.

When the car’s driver attempted to turn right on Wildrose Lane at about 9:05 p.m., the force of the turn threw Christopher off the roof and into the street, authorities said. Police and fire personnel responded to the scene, where they found Christopher had suffered major head and abdomen injuries.

Due to the severity of the injuries, Christopher was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange. He was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, the county coroner’s office said.

Details on memorial services will be released as they are made available.

Those with information on the accident are asked to call Investigator Dennis Fulton of the Huntington Beach Police Traffic Bureau at (714) 536-5670.
