DUI checkpoint nets four arrests

Nearly 20 drivers were cited and four were arrested Friday night during a DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa, police officials said.

The checkpoint was stationed at Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street for about six hours. Police screened 212 of the 647 cars that passed through the checkpoint and investigated 25 of them for possibly driving under the influence.

Authorities ended up arresting three people on suspicion of DUI and one person on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale. Police also cited nine drivers for not having a license and 10 for various vehicle violations. Nine cars were impounded Friday night.

Police have scheduled another checkpoint for Aug. 26.
