Lions win opener

COSTA MESA — The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team opened the season with a 25-15, 22-25, 25-7, 25-13 nonconference victory against visiting Holy Names Wednesday night.

Senior Kelsey Wirt led the Lions with 16 kills and 17 digs. Senior Heather DeJongh added 10 kills. Sophomore Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, contributed nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Alison Verwey also had nine kills, while sophomore Ariel Stickler also finished with 17 digs for the Lions.

Senior Meghan Walsh led Vanguard with 28 assists and sophomore Alexandra Leja had 22 assists.

Holy Names, led by Ashley Nickell’s 12 kills, dropped to 0-2.
