Sounding Off: Bridge club will have new home

About 25 years ago, some members of the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club initiated a “Round Robin” rubber bridge group that met at the club twice a month Tuesday afternoons. The activity was open to everyone in the community, men and women, members and non-members. Through playing fees, the group generated modest but continuing revenues for the club. More importantly, the bridge sessions provided mental stimulation and enhanced the lives of many Laguna residents.

Until now. The bridge players were recently informed that as of Aug. 31 they could no longer play at the Woman’s Club as before, apparently because the activity was not profitable enough to fulfill the club’s current mission of generating maximum revenue through building rentals. As a long-time supporter of the Woman’s Club, I’m saddened to see monetary considerations take precedence over community service.

But there’s a happy ending to this story: Laguna Beach Seniors Inc. graciously agreed to let the bridge group meet at the new state-of-the-art Susi Q Center. The group is very grateful for the Seniors’ hospitality, and hopes to remain both a recreational and financial asset in the future.
