Former Corona del Mar High standout Taylor Dent and Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch have earned men’s and women’s wild-card qualifying berths, respectively, into the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, Aug. 31 through Sept. 13 at the United States Tennis Assn. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Dent, 28, who played at Wimbledon in June, will return to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2005. He has missed much of the past three years with a back problem, for which he had two surgeries in 2007.

Once ranked No. 21 in the world before his back problems, Dent is ranked No. 202.

Glatch represented the U.S. in the Fed Cup in April and also competed at Wimbledon and the French Open this year.

UCI women drop opener

TEMPE, Ariz. — The UC Irvine women’s soccer team had a stormy start to its season Friday night at Arizona State.

The host Sun Devils posted a 2-0 nonconference victory in a game shortened due to the threat of lightning in the area.

After ASU took a 2-0 lead in the first half, the game was halted by a 100-minute lightning delay.

Play resumed, but the game was halted in the 78th minute due to more concern over lightning.

Junior UCI goalie Danielle de Seriere had three saves for the visitors, whose lone shot was produced by sophomore Lexi Kopf. UCI had no shots on goal.

There were six yellow cards and one red card issued. UCI sophomore Kelly Block earned the red card in the 75th minute, forcing UCI to briefly play a player short.

UCI plays at Arizona tonight at 7.
