Make a wave

Skimboarders got the best of what was offered Monday in Newport Beach, where a southern swell introduced itself to local crowds and is expected to gain strength later this week.

According to Surfline.com, a southern swell that came in Monday and grew throughout the day will continue today and possibly into Wednesday.

Newport Beach lifeguards said the water was basically flat along Newport Pier, but as they hit the more south-facing Wedge at the end of Balboa Peninsula and 56th Street near the Santa Ana River, beachgoers got some larger waves, in some places between 6 and 8 feet.

The water should be in the 60s and the waves should continue to give skimboarders plenty to talk about, lifeguards said.
