John Kenneth (Ken) Hamel, M.D.

We celebrate the life of Ken Hamel. Ken was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was loved and admired by all whom had the good fortune of knowing him. He was born in Tecumseh, Nebraska on November 3, 1916 and lived an amazing and full life of over 92 years. He passed away on August 21, 2009 at Hoag Hospital where he was Chief of Staff in 1965 and spent much of his career as a wonderful and caring ear, nose and throat doctor. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of over 62 years, Ruth; his two children Doug (Linda) from Georgia and Mary (Dan) Pennington from Newport Beach; four grandchildren Hillary (Bob), Whitney, Courtney (Nick) and Spencer as well as three great-grandchildren Danny, Katie and Luke.

Ken and Ruth were residents of Newport Beach for most of their lives and have enjoyed living at Regents Point, Irvine for the last 10 years. Ken was a member of St. Mark Presbyterian Church.

He graduated from University of Nebraska Medical School and served in the US Army during WWII as a Captain and a battalion surgeon.
