Pestolesi honored

UC Irvine junior Kari Pestolesi has been named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s volleyball.

The 5-foot-11 outside hitter led the Anteaters, ranked No. 22 in the latest poll announced Monday, to a 3-0 record and the title at the Nevada Invitational Friday and Saturday.

UCI upset then-No. 6-ranked Cal in five games to open the tournament.

Pestolesi had 17 kills against Cal Friday, then pounded 23 in a five-set win over UConn Saturday. She added 16 in a four-game triumph over Nevada and was named MVP of the tournament.

Senior setter Taryn Robertson earned all-tournament honors in Nevada.

UCI, which plays host to the UCI Classic Friday and Saturday, has not been ranked since 1988.

Williams bests Glatch

FLUSHING, N.Y. — Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch lost to Serena Williams, 6-4, 6-1, in the opening round of the U.S. Open Monday.

Glatch, 19, a wild-card entry, is ranked No. 102.

UCI blanks Nevada

RENO — Devon Delarosa, Tanya Taylor and Dana Sanderlin scored to lead the UC Irvine women’s soccer team to a 3-0 nonconference road victory over Nevada Sunday.

Sanderlin added an assist to help the Anteaters improve to 3-1.

Junior Danielle de Seriere had one save to earn her first shutout of the season.

UCI posted a 16-2 advantage in shots.

Nevada fell to 0-3.
