The saying goes that you shouldn’t run with scissors. But in some cases, you shouldn’t even walk with them, as a 56-year-old Costa Mesa man learned earlier this week.

Rafael Castro, who police believe to be a transient, was arrested Sunday after they said he pulled out a pair of scissors and menacingly approached some people on Newport Boulevard who were trying to shoo him away. According to police, about 5 p.m. Castro approached some people at a business at 1835 Newport Blvd. asking for money. They refused and told him to go away, which is when he pulled out the scissors and threatened them, said Sgt. Bryan Glass. Castro was arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He pleaded not guilty and is slated to be back in court Thursday.

In other incidents, authorities could not figure out what started a fire at an AT&T; phone box that scorched more than 200 phone lines and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage in Newport Beach. Phone service was eventually restored to the customers who depended on the box at Wavecrest Drive and Sand Point Way for service.
