Gas leak closes neighborhood

Newport Beach authorities closed off a Corona del Mar neighborhood until 4:30 p.m. Friday because of a gas leak, police said.

About 1:15 p.m., construction workers were using a large piece of construction equipment, likely a backhoe, to dig around a house on Morning Canyon Road when they sheared a gas line, said Sgt. Shontel Sherwood.

The fire department responded to the scene and said it was safe for neighbors to remain in their homes, Sherwood said.

Police closed off streets going into the neighborhood, which is near Driftwood Road, she said.
