Man gets 16 months for weapons cache

A Garden Grove man convicted of selling an old Costa Mesa police SWAT uniform to undercover officers and had guns and ammunition in his home will soon be heading to prison.

Craig McVay, 48, was sentenced to 16 months in state prison last week after pleading guilty to possessing deadly weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition, which violated his probation.

McVay was arrested in early August by Costa Mesa police, who were tipped off that he was selling one of their old SWAT uniforms on Craigslist.org. While undercover officers discussed buying the uniform from McVay at his Garden Grove home, he also offered to sell them a police baton, police said.

McVay was on three years’ probation for a 2007 drug conviction. The restrictions forbade him from possessing weapons or ammunition, authorities said.
