Coastal Cleanup Day in Laguna

The 25th Anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day, now a simultaneous international effort that takes place in dozens of countries the same day, will be on Saturday, September 19, 2009, 9am to noon this year. The larger global effort is coordinated by the The Ocean Conservancy.

Included will be cleanups of coastal waters plus inland parks, streams and lakes throughout the USA to remove debris from our fragile ecosystems. You can help turn the tide against trash in your OC neighborhood by checking the OC Parks website (below).

Coastal Cleanup Day is the highlight of the California Coastal Commission year ‘round Adopt-A-Beach Program. Last year, 70,000 CCC volunteers removed more than 1.6 million pounds of trash and recyclables.

In Laguna, we will have stations at: (1) Crescent Bay Beach (2) Main Beach (HQ) (3) Victoria Beach (4) Treasure Island Beach (below The Montage Resort) (5) Aliso Creek County Beach coordinated by Mike Hazzard and Rick Conkey. This includes 1 mile of the lower streambed, also south to West Street Beach.

Each station is autonomous, no pre-registration required, just enthusiasm and a hat (sunscreen optional).

Bags, gloves, tidepool brochures, commemorative posters and Cal Coastal Commission educational materials will be available.

Community Service Hours for youth will be signed by our staff.

Special: Our friends from South Orange County Dive Club will be performing underwater cleanups in North Laguna (Shaw’s Cove and Crescent Bay) and also at the Treasure Island location.
