Golden Bears reunite for evenings of music

Tickets are still available for the Golden Bear Reunion, scheduled for Sept. 25 and 26 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort’s Grand Ballroom.

The Pacific Coast Highway landmark was built as a restaurant in 1929, and had the likes of Errol Flynn and Lionel Barrymore as customers.

It was in the Bear’s run as a music club from 1963 through 1986 that it achieved international fame.

The Bear closed in 1986. Musicians who performed there will perform in special shows to commemorate the city’s centennial.

Honk, David Lindley, Ray Manzarek and special guests will perform two shows at 6:30 and 10 p.m. Sept. 25.

On Sept. 26, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson and special guests will perform at 6:30 and 10 p.m.

Three eras of Bear owners — Delbert Kauffman, George Nikas, and Carole and Chuck Babiracki — and other former Bears will be in attendance.

Show prices range from $57.50 to $97.50; higher-priced seats will include a Bear-menu dinner on the early show and appetizers on the late show.

Purchasers will be limited to six tickets per order.

A few Sponsor Tables of 10 seats are also available.

Proceeds from the shows will benefit Sweet Relief, a Huntington Beach-based charity that aids career musicians with illness, disabilities or age-related problems.
