Caron takes title at Supergirl event

Huntington Beach resident Amy Caron won the title in street skateboarding at the Supergirl Jam event in Venice Beach on Sunday.

The competition offered three obstacles for the ladies to tackle, but the end Caron’s skill and execution earned her the victory.

“I didn’t win the first year I didn’t win last year, so I really wanted to get it,” Caron said in a release. “I needed to redeem myself ... I’m pretty stoked.”

The Supergirl Jam series, which featured three stops, concluded with the event in Venice Beach.

Local volleyball club starts up, has tryouts

The HBC boys’ volleyball club kicks off its inaugural season this fall, with tryouts for boys ages 12-18 beginning Saturday in Huntington Beach.

The club, led by Adam Cutrell and Craig Pizanti, welcomes boys of all skill levels to a two-hour tryout session. Tryouts are open to anyone and cost is $20. Coaches include 2009 AVP players Casey Patterson and Bryan Stewart.

Golden West drops football opener

The Golden West College football team fell at Saddleback, 33-23, in its season opener Saturday.

Quarterback Mike Vanderipe had 306 yards passing and three touchdowns in the loss, while Bryce Blake had 202 yards receiving and scored twice. Trent Burns also had an 11-yard touchdown catch for Golden West.
