Dillan Freiberg had a foot in each of the Newport Harbor High football team’s scores in the season opener. His six extra-point kicks put him in the Orange County record book Friday.

The left-footed kicker went six for six during the Sailors’ 45-7 nonleague victory at Aliso Niguel, pushing his consecutive streak to 60 straight successful PATs, a county record.

He also kicked a 25-yard field goal.

“It’s a great feat,” Sailors Coach Jeff Brinkley said of seeing Freiberg surpass the previous record set in 1993 by Tommy Louie of Irvine High.

The 56-year-old Brinkley is three wins shy of recording a great milestone as well.

Brinkley, in his 24th year at Newport Harbor, is closing in on win No. 200 at the school. Only seven other coaches have recorded 200 career victories at county schools.

A junior transfer from the Bay Area led the Sailors in rushing.

Cedric Whitaker wasn’t even on Newport Harbor’s roster before the season, but he sure made his presence felt in the opener.

On his first carry, Whitaker went left and sped past the defense untouched for a 42-yard touchdown run 43 seconds into the second half.

“He moved in from Oakland,” Brinkley said of Whitaker, who rushed four times for 59 yards. “He’s got a little speed. He’s a good little football player [on] both sides of the ball.”

Whitaker also played cornerback. In the fourth quarter, he returned a fumble 72 yards for a touchdown.

With the 5-8, 160-pounder, the Sailors have a game-changer.

Corona del Mar High senior quarterback Michael Borchard took over at Laguna Beach High late in the first half Friday, helping give the Sea Kings a 21-20 halftime lead on their way to a 65-34 nonleague win.

With 43 seconds left in the second quarter, Borchard’s 45-yard pass to senior Justin Tam brought the ball to the Breakers’ five-yard line. After a penalty, Borchard scrambled in from 10 yards out. Borchard then made an athletic move by diving over the right pylon for a two-point-conversion run.

Corona del Mar also got the ball to open the second half and scored on J.D. Abbott’s eight-yard run, then scored again when Laguna Beach fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Alex Swigert ran it in from 14 yards out. The 22 straight points, in less than two minutes, gave the Sea Kings a 35-20 lead and Laguna Beach never recovered.

The Sage Hill School defense recorded its first shutout since 2004 in its 20-point nonleague road win over Animo Saturday.

The Lightning blanked Sherman Indian, 14-0, on Oct. 22, 2004, having already shut out Fairmont Prep, 35-0, Oct. 2.

Shutouts, unfortunately for Sage Hill, were all too familiar last year. The Lightning failed to score points in four games.

In the fourth quarter, Animo had its best chance to score. Animo’s quarterback launched a deep pass, but the receiver dropped it, trying to turn and run before he could secure it near the Sage Hill 10-yard line.

Estancia’s game-winning field goal by John Diego with 33 seconds left came four plays after the Eagles converted a fourth-and-one situation at the Bolsa Grande 15-yard line by drawing the Matadors offside with a hard count. The penalty created first-and-goal at the 10 with 2:46 left.

Quarterback Alek Kirshner was instructed to either create the penalty or call timeout.

“[The Matadors] are all amped up. I knew that and they thought we were going to run up the middle again and we wanted to get them to flinch,” Estancia Coach Mike Bargas said. “That’s our trick play there.”

The Costa Mesa Pop Warner program was featured before and after the Costa Mesa-Beckman game Friday at Estancia.

Captains from each Pop Warner team walked to midfield for the coin toss along with their mentors, the captains from the Mustangs.

Over the summer, a few Costa Mesa players were involved in a mentor program for the local Pop Warner program. The Costa Mesa varsity players worked as coaches during practices and got to know the younger players.

The idea is for high school players to make an impact and help the youth. The hope is that such investment will help draw more future players to the Mustangs’ program.

Estancia players also served in the mentor program with Pop Warner players.

At halftime Friday, two Costa Mesa Pop Warner teams scrimmaged and Pop Warner cheerleaders performed.

Newport Harbor plays host on Thursday to Loyola of Los Angeles, ranked No. 10 in the latest CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division coaches’ poll.

The Cubs lost at No. 3-ranked Mission Viejo, 26-7, and also lost star running back Anthony Barr.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior left the game with a broken ankle late in the opening quarter. He will miss the remainder of the season.

Special teams play helped CdM overcome its shaky start, and junior Donald Dalton has continued to be a big part of that.

Dalton has two touchdown kick returns in two games and has also contributed in other ways. Friday, he caught a 37-yard pass from Borchard on CdM’s opening drive and also intercepted a pass at the CdM 13-yard line near the end of the first quarter.

“He’s doing a very good job back there for us, obviously,” Coach Jason Hitchens said of Dalton finding the end zone again. “Two games, two kickoff returns [for touchdowns].”

By scoring 34 points, Laguna Beach eclipsed its combined total (21) from the teams’ previous six meetings, dating back to 2004. Corona del Mar has won 12 straight in the series, the last Laguna Beach win coming when the team — then known as the Artists — earned a 41-21 triumph in 1985. After that game, the teams didn’t play each other again until 1999 and have played yearly since.

Costa Mesa Coach Jeremy Osso helps coach a Costa Mesa Pop Warner flag division team on which his son plays.

Newport Harbor held Aliso Viejo to 72 yards on 27 rushing attempts.

UC Berkeley-bound linebacker Cecil Whiteside, who anchored the Sailors, was looking forward to facing Barr.

“He’s a great running back,” Whiteside said. “We just have to contain him, just gang-tackling him.”

Bargas had to pause during a postgame interview because he suddenly became choked with emotion when discussing his team’s comeback win.

“I’m just trying to come off of this thing,” Bargas said.
