HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Newport girls humble Lightning

NEWPORT BEACH — Just a year ago, it was Sage Hill School that sent a surprise in the form of an 11-7 win against Newport Harbor High in girls’ tennis.

But this year, the only shocker was how easily the Sailors won.

Newport Harbor Coach Kristen Coach said it was simply a product of hard work turned in during the off-season. That apparently helped the Sailors score a 13-5 nonleague win against the Lightning at The Tennis Club Tuesday.

Sophomore Blake Bakkila won each of the No. 3 singles sets.

Newport Harbor’s Samantha Stalder won the two sets she competed in No. 1 singles play. Lauren Conway and Holly Hovnanian won two out of three in No. 3 doubles.
