Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High standout, is returning to the sand.

May-Treanor, who has been out for a year, will reunite with longtime partner Kerri Walsh for the AVP Crocs Tour World Challenge: USA vs. Brazil, Sept. 25-27 in Glendale, Ariz.

“It’s hard to believe it has been an entire year since I last played on tour,” May-Treanor said in a statement. “I’ve been working hard to get back into shape after the injury and I think it will be a lot of fun getting back on the sand and playing with Kerri in this unique event.”

May-Treanor had been out because her left Achilles ruptured while practicing for a number on “Dancing with the Stars,” in October. She said she also tore the calf muscle and had to learn to walk all over again.

An eight-to-12-month recovery/rehab stint was required.

Last month, May-Treanor wasn’t sure about teaming up again with Walsh, who had returned to the sand and played with Rachel Wacholder. Walsh gave birth to her first child in May.

May-Treanor and Walsh have not played together, competitively, since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where the duo won gold for the second time and firmly became known as the greatest beach volleyball team of all time. After their gold-medal run in China, the terrific tandem extended their international winning streak to 69 matches and 10 event titles. They dominated, reaching 112 straight wins in international and domestic events.
