Fast relay team features 3 locals

Three Newport Beach boys, who compete for the Irvine Aquazots, delivered a noteworthy performance in swimming recently at a Junior Olympics meet in Mission Viejo.

Timothy Hanson, Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Henry Wilde, along with Andrew Knoell of Irvine won the 4x50-yard freestyle relay with the fastest time in the country, finishing in 2 minutes, 6.11 seconds in the 9-10-year-old division. The winning time was also an Aquazot record.

The quartet also finished in the top five nationally for the medley relay.

Eagles 31, Santa Margarita 14

The Eagles entered the game fired up even though it was an early away game that started at 8 a.m.

Dylan Bernal provided one of several highlights for the Eagles, running 35 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

Geovanny Martinez, a first-year player, had his first carries with two consecutive runs to capture a first down for the Eagles.

Then Malachi Wright scored a touchdown, running 30 yards, and Griffin Beth ran the ball in for the extra point, ending the first half, 13-0.

Leading off the second half, Eagles’ second-year player Ben Muise handed off the ball to one of the team’s fastest runners, Terrell Jackson, who scored a 40-yard touchdown. After an interception by Santa Margarita, Holden McLeod pulled a flag to stop the Mustangs drive. The game ended with another 40-yard touchdown run by Jackson, helping the Eagles improve to 3-0.

Junior Pee Wee (Silver)

Eagles 25, Lakewood Lancers 31

Both teams came into the game tied for first place in league. The scoring opened up with Cole Kinder racing 60 yards for the first score of the game. He quickly followed with another TD. The offensive line created nice openings. That line featured Zack Swies, Anthony De La Torre, Nick Fiola, Nick Torres and Jonathan Muise. The Lakewood squad dominated the second quarter and the two teams went into halftime with the Eagles leading ,13-12. The second half was hard-fought with Christian Ferraro, Steven Muise, Andrew Laidlaw, Narciso Montes, Hooper, Christian Veit and Gage Roberson leading the defensive effort. Kinder contributed with five tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The teams exchanged touchdowns, with one more by Kinder and the final one by Roberson on a 10-yard run to tie the score and send it into overtime. Lakewood shut down the Eagles in a tiebreaker on four plays and then scored on a fourth-and-nine to win the game.

Junior Pee Wee (Black)

Eagles 34, Canyon Hills Panthers 13

Jacob Marines delivered for the Eagles, scoring two touchdowns.

Christian Baskharoon, David Atencio and Connor Grey all scored touchdowns as well for the Eagles. Gasper Ramirez kicked two extra points and ran in another PAT. Cody Merrifield pushed his way through the Panthers’ defensive line for another extra point.

Costa Mesa’ defense was extraordinary. Deshandre Kerkhoff was clutch with a fumble recovery and two big sacks. Hitting hard for the Eagles and shutting down the Panthers’ offense were Merrifield, Atencio, Ramirez, Baskharoon, Sam Swanson and Christian Rodriguez.

Tony Hunt was the Player of the Game. He intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards. He also finished the game with 50 rushing yards.

Newport Breakers 1,

San Clemente 0

Marley Aragon saved the team time after time with great saves and a strong foot.

Her biggest save came on a last-second penalty kick by San Clemente She dived and blocked the angled shot away from the goal to secure Newport Beach’s 1-0 victory.

The Newport Breakers could only field 10 boys (Timothy Donald helped coach from the sideline due to injury). As a team Harrison Moore, Ethan Robinson, Ronan Ferrentino, Tyler Fiskin, Hayden Felfe and Jack Faber helped keep it close, as it was scoreless through three periods.

Steven Richards stood out with his exceptional command of the midfield and Chase Adelsohn constantly turned away San Clemente scoring tries as the sweeper. Alex Davis broke loose in the fourth period and hit a crossing shot.

Boys Under 10

Aztecs 6, Vasi 2

Ty Marking came out hot, scoring two goals in the first quarter for the Aztecs. Reid Wiley, Carter Bays and Sam Darwish were tough on defense, holding the opponents scoreless until the third quarter when the opponents finally cracked the defense. The third quarter featured goals by Luc Stuka and Blake Ludesto and increased the lead to 4-1.

Goalkeeper Anthony Varela helped protected the lead, while Jack Kalatschan and Ethan Lacher contributed to the win. Blake Ludes scored two goals in the fourth quarter.

Orange Crush 3, Raptors 3

After two shots on goal each in the first quarter, Scott Ryder of Orange Crush scored a goal, assisted by Griffin Brockhoff. Griffin scored a goal in the second quarter and Scott scored a goal in the fourth quarter. Garrett Gritzmacher, Jack White, Jonny Rimlinger and Ryan Pham cumulatively made more than a dozen saves as goalkeepers. Gritzmacher also had a shot on goal in the third. Connor Spence made a defensive block in the first and moved the ball forward as a midfielder in the third and fourth quarters. Marcus Croxson blocked the ball several times, returning the ball to the possession of the Orange Crush.

Boys Under 8

Green Bullets vs. Galaxy

The Green Bullets used their deep roster to constantly pressure the Galaxy in their season opener. Zach Forbath led the scoring with two goals, including one coming off a great pass from Luke Bashore. Bashore also used his strong leg to later add a goal. The Galaxy goaltenders made a number of great saves to deny any further scoring, in spite of the great ball movement, line-drive shots and hustle of Cole McCunniff, Ezer DeAlmeida, Jackson Bryant, and Chandler Airth.
