Eagles capture crown

POMONA — Senior Amy Hartwell recorded 16 kills and 20 digs to help lead the Estancia High girls’ volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 victory over host Ganesha to win the Tri-Cities Tournament Saturday.

Hartwell was named MVP of the 24-team tournament, while senior Amanda Watson also made the all-tournament team.

Watson led the Eagles (6-1) with 28 digs. Junior Lily McLendon had 15 kills and four aces, and senior setter Shona Lamb contributed 32 assists.

Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sydney Brombal and Morgan Boukather notched seven kills each to lead Corona del Mar High past Santa Margarita, 25-17, 25-23, in a Division I semifinal at Edison High Saturday.

The Sea Kings, seeded No. 2, will face top-seeded Los Alamitos in the title match Monday night at Edison. The best-of-three match will start after the Division II final, which begins at 6 p.m.

Madie Smith had 22 assists, Brombal added five digs and Claire Ham produced two blocks.

In the quarterfinals, CdM defeated Orange Lutheran, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12. Hailey Senske led with 12 kills, Smith had 28 assists and Katelyn Baker contriubted 12 digs. Catherine Sullivan had two aces, while Senske and Boukather had two blocks each.

The Sea Kings opened the 16-team championship bracket with a 21-25, 25-16, 15-9 win against Palos Verdes. Boukather had eight kills and two blocks. Smith had 28 assists, Baker had 10 digs and Senske had two aces

CdM began with a 25-20, 26-24 victory over Mater Dei. Brombal was the team leader in kills with seven. Smith had 23 assists and Mary McKennon had seven digs.

Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High reached the Division I quarterfinals, where El Dorado beat the Sailors, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11, Saturday at Edison.

Katey Thompson had eight kills and one block, while Mackenzi Campbell contributed 25 assists and three kills. Newport Harbor (5-1) had five service errors in the third set.

The Sailors began the 16-team championship bracket with a 25-14, 25-23 win against Mater Dei. Kirby Burnham had six kills and one block.

Thompson had six kills and one block to lead the Sailors past Vista Murietta, 25-17, 25-13, to win their pool in the morning.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 14,

Coronado 9

NEWPORT BEACH — Blake Kelly had five goals, one assist and one steal to lead the Sailors to the nonleague win Saturday.

Matt Russell scored three goals, while Jack Yeager contributed four assists and four steals each. Farrel South and Jon Walters scored two goals each for Newport Harbor (3-0).

Sailors goalies Ikika Sarme (six saves) and Chris Whitelegge (four) helped on defense.

Western Tournament

ANAHEIM — Charlie Umanksy scored nine goals, including the game-winning penalty shot with 32 seconds left to lift Estancia High to a 15-14 win against Hoover of Glendale in the consolation final Saturday.

Preston Schow and Matt Thome scored two goals each, while Frankie Gonzales and Roy Smith had one apiece. Goalie Connor Graham had seven saves for the Eagles (3-2).

Umansky scored five goals in a 10-5 win over Redondo Union in a consolation semifinal. Schow had three goals, while Miguel Arteaga and Smith had one each. Graham had nine saves

CROSS COUNTRY

Woodbridge Invitational

IRVINE — The Corona del Mar High girls won the senior and sophomore races, while the boys were first in the junior race for its division Saturday.

Melanie Powers won the senior race with a personal-best 17 minutes, 56 seconds, Ali Hummelberg was third with a pesonal record, 18:37 and Kristina Finahashi was fifth in 18:43, also a PR. Sarah Kedding took 11th in a personal-best 18:52.

Austin Barvin was seventh in 15:55 and Alex Turney was 13th in 16:33 in the junior race. Kristen Rivera was third in 18:50 in the girls’ sophomore race.

CdM was second in the freshman boys’ race, led by Dylan Gronendyke (26th in 17:42).

Woodbridge Invitational

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High’s boys took second in the Division II juniors race Saturday.

Alex Jolly finished 11th in 15 minutes, 41 seconds. Austin Little (27th in 16:16), Aaron Fleming (29th in 16:18), Ryan Dutch (34th in 16:22), Greg Brostek (42nd in 16:32), Luke Dawson (70th in 17:03) and Addison McLaren (17:22) also competed.

Jake Manning was 35th in the Division II seniors race, finishing in 16:04. Jake Barber came in 30th in the sophomores race in 16:35, while teammate Jason Moreno was 35th in 16:44.

On the girls’ side, the Sailors finished eighth the rated race. Junior Tori Saris led Newport Harbor, finishing 21st in 18:10. Freshman Maggie Goodson (38th in 18:41), sophomore Lauren Clemence (54th in 18:55), senior Patty Moddelmog (60th in 19:01), senior Ava Nelson (74th in 19:18), senior Casey DeYoung (94th in 19:39) and junior Jordan Murrell (99th in 19:43) also competed.

Newport Harbor competes in the Dana Hills Invitational next week.

Woodbridge Invitational

IRVINE — Sage Hill School’s Dylan Thies finished in third place in the Division IV freshman race with a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds Saturday.

Freshman Chris Andras was 30th in 17:55.

Jackie Dion (21:02) was 97th in the girls’ Division IV rated race, while Slater Stanley was 40th with a personal-best 17:06 in boys’ junior race.
