Businessman lending stamps

Pacific Investment Management Co. founder and Newport Beach resident William H. Gross has given $8 million to the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C., for the creation of a 12,000-square-foot gallery named after him, according to an announcement by museum officials.

In addition, he’s lending the institution three of the country’s rarest stamps from his personal collection: a cover from the Pony Express service; a cover featuring the 10-cent George Washington stamp, dated July 2, 1847; and a block of four 1918 “Inverted Jennys.”

The Jennys were the result of a printing mistake, erroneously depicting images of bi-planes flying upside down inside the stamp’s frame.
