Golden West College is starting a new program for displaced workers to get retrained in automotive technology Monday.

The Automotive Service Technician Training Program begins with 24 out-of-work people and provides them with free tuition and books.

The program is funded by a $300,000 grant, said Doug Boswell, an automotive technology instructor.

The field is in need of auto technicians, and the demand is expected to increase over the next 10 years, Boswell said. Students will learn how to maintain, diagnose and repair modern vehicles and light trucks through classes in Engine Repair, Electric/Electronic Systems and Automotive Chassis: Brakes. The program is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Students will learn the skills needed along with how to write resumes and give job interviews.

Participants will spend four to eight hours a day in school Monday through Friday over two semesters. Students will also gain experience through a paid internship.

The college is looking for veterans who have served in the last four years or displaced workers collecting unemployment benefits.

The program will take an additional 24 students next semester. For more information, call (714) 895-8276.
