SANTA BARBARA — The No. 21-ranked Anteaters were upset, 23-25, 27-29, 27-25, 25-16, 15-9, in a Big West Conference road match Saturday.

Keri Pestolesi and Juliane Piggott had 14 kills apiece for UCI (11-3, 1-1 in conference). Pestolesi, a junior outside hitter, had a team-high 18 digs.

Riley Cropper had 13 kills and Alexandra Hauser chipped in 11 for the Anteaters, who received 52 assists from senior setter Taryn Robertson.

UCSB (11-2, 2-0) had 12 ace serves, twice as many as the Anteaters, who earned a 5-3 advantage .

Azuza Pacific def. Vanguard

AZUSA — The visiting Lions were beaten, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Heather DeJongh had 11 kills and hit .304 for the Lions (9-6, 3-3 in conference).

APU is now 14-4, 5-1.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCLA 10, UC Irvine 4

LOS ANGELES — The No. 2-ranked Bruins opened a 6-1 halftime lead and cruised in the nonconference game Saturday at UCLA.

Senior Cole Bielskis had three goals to lead No. 7-ranked UCI, which fell to 6-4.

Tom Kruip had a goal and Matt Johnson posted nine saves for the Anteaters.

UCLA is now 9-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational

STANFORD — UC Irvine sophomore Rex Nelson finished 42nd, covering the 8,000-meter men’s course in 25 minutes, 19 seconds, to highlight Anteaters’ competitors Saturday.

Sophomore Melissa Mead, like Nelson a Newport Harbor High product, finished 63rd to pace the UCI women, traversing 6,000 meters in 22:31.

The UCI men’s team finished 10th and the women were 14th.

Victor Bonilla (61st in 25:40) and Brett Matejka (66th in 25:43) also fared well for the men.

Chloe Fata (64th in 22:32) and Carlotta Pham (77th in 22:51) rounded out the top three for the UCI women.

Stanford won the men’s and women’s team titles.

MEN’S SOCCER

Azusa Pacific 2, Vanguard 0

COSTA MESA — The Lions matched the Golden State Athletic Conference visitors with 11 shots apiece, but couldn’t score Saturday.

Trevor Herrera made five saves for Vanguard (3-4-1, 0-1 in conference).

Brett Taylor scored in the 15th minute and Reid Baker added an insurance tally in the 53rd minute for APU (8-0, 1-0).
