SANTA BARBARA — A penalty kick in the 21st minute was the difference in the Big West Conference opener Sunday at Harder Stadium.

No. 23-ranked UCI, the defending Big West champion, fell to 6-3.

No. 7-ranked UCSB is now 6-2-1.

Victor Chinchilla had three saves in his first start, as UCI sophomore goalie Andrew Fontein sat out due to a leg injury.

San Diego State 2, UC Irvine 1

SAN DIEGO — The visiting Anteaters lost a 1-0 lead after freshman Devon Delarosa converted an assist from Tanya Taylor in the 21st minute of the nonconference match Sunday.

Danielle de Seriere had six saves for UCI (7-3-1) .

San Diego State (6-3-2) scored the game-winner in the third minute of overtime.

UCI opens Big West Conference play Friday against visiting UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
