Ex-Sailor settles for 2nd

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor, playing in her first Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tournament in more than a year, finished second with partner Kerri Walsh in the World Challenge Sunday.

May-Treanor and Walsh were defeated, 21-11, 21-16, in a 43-minute title match by Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca.

May-Treanor, who tore an Achilles tendon while practicing for an episode of “Dancing with the Stars,” in October, last played with Walsh on Sept. 20. 2008, when they won the AVP Manhattan Beach Open.

May-Treanor and Walsh, two-time Olympic gold medalists, defeated the tandem from Brazil in the final round of pool play Saturday night.

May-Treanor and Walsh split $19,000 for their runner-up showing, while the Brazilian duo divided $20,000.

“For the first tournament back, not being 100%, we had a good tournament,” May-Treanor said in a statement.

“Misty can still hold her own and I’m really proud of her,” Walsh said.

Former Newport Harbor standout April Ross teamed with Jen Kessy to finish third, posting a 21-18, 21-15 victory over Brazilians Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes.

Ross and Kessy split $12,000.

In the men’s tournament, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Matt Olson finished eighth, splitting $4,000.
