Swinging a club in the dark is better than not swinging at all.

The Newport Harbor High girls’ golf team found itself playing the last couple of holes with little visibility Tuesday. The Sailors didn’t miss a beat.

On a course it doesn’t call home, Newport Harbor continued its undefeated season.

The Sailors beat Los Alamitos, 209-233, in a Sunset League match on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Two days before, Coach Scott Tarnow wasn’t sure if Newport Harbor (9-0, 3-0 in league) could play a match Tuesday.

“Big Canyon [Country Club] was closed for reseeding and I found out Sunday,” Tarnow said. “I called Costa Mesa the first thing Monday morning and Costa Mesa was nice enough to let us play.

“A handful of teams were scheduled to play in Costa Mesa [Tuesday] and [it] managed to fit us in. We were lucky.”

The Sailors have been fortunate on the course as well.

Dating back to last season, Newport Harbor is 25-1 overall. The Sailors, led by four-year starter Morgan Moody, are on their way to possibly beating last year’s 17-1 record.

Tarnow, in his 10th season, said the record is the best in the program’s history.

“We were looking for a perfect season last year until we lost to Esperanza on the road,” said Tarnow, whose top finishers Tuesday included Moody, Lindsey Hanna, Lauren Draganza, Ali Thomas and Casey Jones. “We’ll try to be perfect again.”

The Sailors weren’t tripped up in the dark Tuesday.

Former Newport Harbor baseball coach Evan Chalmers is now in the rival school’s colors.

Chalmers said he has joined Coach John Emme’s staff at Corona del Mar as an assistant. Chalmers was fired in June after going 36-62-1 in four years as Newport Harbor’s coach.

Chalmers is a teacher at Newport Harbor.

“It’s a little odd at first,” Chalmers said of making the drive to CdM and putting on a new uniform. “But I’m excited about coaching again [in high school]. I’m working with the young kids.

“I’m just hoping I can help this program improve.”

Emme, who will enter his 13th year at CdM, is counting on Chalmers to provide a lift. The Sea Kings advanced to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs last year.

“He’s raised our strength and condition program to a level it has never been before,” Emme said of Chalmers. “Evan and I are good friends, and as soon as the hurt [from getting let go] wore off, we talked about having him cover over here.

“It’s a great fit and the kids are going to benefit.”

Jim Kiefer is the new boys’ athletic director at Costa Mesa.

Kiefer also coaches the baseball team on campus. Last year, Kiefer led the Mustangs to the Orange Coast League championship, the program’s first league title since 1978.

Andreas Gaynor takes over as the Newport Harbor boys’ lacrosse coach, said Assistant Principal Dave Martinez, who is the school’s interim athletic director.

Martinez said Gaynor recently coached the junior varsity team at Santa Margarita and he was a coach at Western Albemarle in Virginia for three years.
