Jr. Pee Wee Eagles remain undefeated

Throughout the season, the Norwalk Lancers had never tasted defeat, but that is until they met the Costa Mesa Pop Warner Eagles Black team in the Junior Pee Wee Division.

It was the Eagles who remained undefeated at 5-0 after a 26-6 win Saturday. Now, it’s the Eagles playing for the league title this Saturday at 5 p.m. at Estancia’s Jim Scott Stadium.

Strategy said, take control from the whistle, and that is exactly what the Eagles did. On the first play, Jacob Marines broke free to score a 50-yard touchdown. Gasper Ramirez quickly kicked the PAT, giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. A little room to breathe and settle in was earned for the Eagles. As the first quarter continued, David Atencio skillfully faked two Lancers to score a 15-yard touchdown.

The Eagles struck the Lancers another blow as a touchdown was completed with a quarterback keeper by Ramirez to give Costa Mesa 20-0 lead at halftime.

Both teams took to the field determined in the third quarter, and the battle proved scoreless for both teams.

In the fourth quarter, Atencio ran in for a five-yard touchdown for a 26-0 lead. The Lancers were not about to be shut out though, breaking through a touchdown from a 60-yard run late in the fourth. The extra point, though, was denied as the Eagle defense broke the line and sacked the quarterback.

The Eagles’ defense came up bing throughout the game. That defense featured Ryan Sekas, Hunter Mensinger, Marines, Charlie Godshall, Joseph Beckworth, Christian Baskharoon, Ramirez and Atencio.

Flag Division

Eagles 19, Huntington Beach 6

The Eagles offense had a strong showing led by Terrell Jackson, Malachi Wright and Griffin Beth. The Eagles (5-1) scored three touchdowns.

Costa Mesa’s defense also played welll, with Hudson Letterman proving to be a standout. He charged through the Charger line pulling flag after flag – many in the backfield.

Pee Wee Division

Eagles 14, Huntington Beach 0

The Eagles’ defensive line was powerful throughout. The Eagels pinned the Chargers deep early in the game. Ben Bockrath ran back a punt returrn for the Eagles’ first touchdonwn, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Tristan Manning followed up with a successful two-point kick.

The Chargers advanced all the way to the two-yard line in the second quarter, but the Eagles’ defense held strong, pushing them back across the field a full 15 yards. The Eagles’ DaSean Lewis then made an interception, followed by a 50-yard dash by Sam Cruz, preventing the Chargers from any chance of scoring.

Moving into the third quarter, quarterback Pearson Van Horn made a 10-yard precision pass to Joey Cox, who eluded several tackles and delivered the Costa Mesa Eagles’ second touchdown. When it looked like the Chargers might advance after an interception which they ran to the 12-yard line, the Eagles’ defense again held strong. The Eagles took possession and Joshua Mendoza cut through the interior of the defensive line with a reverse move followed by a drive up the middle again by Sam Cruz.

Darren Stevenson recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter to hep with the Eagles’ shutout.

Junior Midget Division

Eagles Black 18, Garden Grove 12

The Garrett Hall-Riley Gaddis connection provided the winning touchdown for the Eagles with 1:20 remaining.

With the game tied, 12-12, the Eagles needed a big play. Hall provided that with his 10-yard touchdown pass to Gaddis for the game-winner.

The first quarter saw the Eagles’ Brett Donnelly receive a 12-yard pass for the first touchdown of the game.

The Eagles’ passing game seemed to be on. But Garden Grove stood strong on its home field. The Bulldogs took a 12-6 lead early in the second quarter. But the Eagles responded, as Stephen Cureton charged in for a 10-yard TD run to tie up the game, leaving the first half a tie, 12–12.

Newport-Mesa Junior All-American

Seahawks 24, South Bay 0

The Newport-Mesa Junior All American Pee-Wee Seahawks dominated the visiting South Bay Packers with a punishing ground attack.

Quarterback Chase Garber led the way with one rushing touchdown, and he also threw a 18-yard touchdown pass to Nicolas Bauer. Fullback Jack Genova paved the way for tailbacks Anthony Battista, who had 151 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, and Jonathan White, who rushed for 38 yards and a TD on three carries.

The Seahawks as a team had 25 carries for 204 yards and three touchdowns. The offensive line contributed to the ground assault. The line featured Max Peterson, Garrett Cleary, Dylan Prider, Jacob Fisher, Sean Korkmaz, Connor Brazeel and Nikolas Dekeyzer, as well as tight ends Nicholas Bauer and Danny Rogers.

Defensively the Seahawks controlled the line of scrimmage with Matt Bonds (four tackles, one sack), Korkmaz (seven tackles, one sack) and Rogers (two tackles, one sack). Also contributing to the defensive shutout were Sutton Barbato (five tackels), Battista (seven tackles), Bauer (five tackles, one fumble recovery), C. Brazeel (three tackles), Dekeyzer (four tackles, one fumble recovery), Nicholas Degiovanni (four tackles), Fisher (two tackles), Davis Ferror (three tackles), Garber (five tackles), Genova (six tackles), Stephan Menzia (two tackles), J.P. Vandevoorde and White (eight tackles).

Patrolling the secondary were Richard Vanis III, Austin Cottrell, Max Morin, Alan Yee and Alex Stowell.

All contributed to the Seahawks first shutout of the 2009 season.

AYSO Region 97

Girls Under 12

Green Hornets 0, Wonder Women 0

In the first half, solid shots were made by Hornets’ Ashley Obuljen and Julianna Eifler. Olivia Blanda, Amanda Cox, Julianna Eifler, Mackenzie Mowery and Brelynn Viloria showed terrific offensive teamwork. Great defensive plays by Jessalyn Andres and Julianna Eifler. Carly Van Oostendorp and Ashley Obuljen showed aggressive foot play with the ball. Jessalyn Adres and Chloe Hyde gave strong defensive kicks and turned away scoring attempts. Goalie Lani Kerrigan stopped every scoring attempt. Green Hornets dominated on offense with five shots on goal compared to Wonder Women’s one shot.

The second half brought great assists and defensive plays by Hyde, Obuljen and Cox. Adres fired several shots. Haley Datt displayed fancy footwork while Eifler really hustled. There was great teamwork from Hailey Hambek, Viloria, Datt, Holly Halperin and Kylee Seeber propelled the Hornets.

Boys Under 12

The Red Team 5,

Blue Crew 1

The Red Team’s Cooper Peters registered his first hat trick of the season. Griffin Burke added one more goal and assisted on two other goals.

The sweeper Liam Tough and speedy Sean Arnold, as well as Spencer Swanson created a solid wall on defense and thwarted many attacks by the Blue Crew. Sohrob Goodarzy, Michael Nieto and Henry Levis also contributed on defense. Corbin Joyce and Brian Shaw provided constant threat in the Blue Crew’s 18-yard box. Alex Micahelson provided two assists.

Sargis Serpayan was again dominant in goal (in the first half) and dazzled the crowd with his dribbling skills in the second half.

Boys Under 10

Newport FC 4, Wolves 0

Newport FC captains Garrett Gendron and Jack Pitchess led the team in a well organized match handling the Wolves. Pitchess opened the scoring and Lucas Mowery added two more including a long-range scorcher. Gendron applied constant pressure up front nearly converting on several occasions. Thomas Vredenburgh patrolled the midfield and Hunter Bostwick provided midfield counter attacks resulting in a goal. Bobby Schulze and Justan Gizer dominated the backfield shutting down each attack. John Bush stepped up his keeper skills and combined with Gizer to earn our first win in shutout fashion. This week’s Game Ball honors went to Bostwick.

Orange Crush 3,

Extreme Blue 3

As goalie in the first quarter, Garrett Gritzmacher gave good direction to his teammates, then displayed great teamwork as a defender in the second quarter and as a midfielder in the third.

Ryan Pham anticipated the direction of the ball as a defender and midfielder and made several great traps and subsequent passes to his teammates. Connor Spence cleared the ball several times and booted the ball far upfield. In the second quarter, Scott Ryder scored a goal, assisted by Spence. Quinn Richards had shots on goal in the first and fourth quarters. Griffin Brockhoff had several shots on goal in the game before scoring a fantastic left-footed goal in the fourth quarter, assisted by Scott Ryder. Jonny Rimlinger and Jack White were consistently good players in goal and out. Marcus Croxson played a great defense in the game and had a tremendous save as goalie in the third quarter.

Boys Under 8

GI Joes vs. Green Chargers

The Chargers came on strong offensively, attempting several shots on goal while the Joe’s goalie Jack Bibb had many stellar saves. The Joe’s Brett Johnson scored the team’s first goal of the game then matched that performance on defense. Blake Jackson added another goal for the Joe’s with a tight shot in front of a packed net. The Chargers kept the pressure on in the second half while Dylan Miller and Charlie Durham of the Joes stayed strong on defense.

Jack Flores and Will Schneider played tough. Nick Sharamitaro, Michael Gallegos and Bibb continued their skillful ball handling and are all due for breakout games.

Green Bullets vs.

Lightning Cobras

The Green Bullets showed off their amazing depth with goals by five different players on Saturday. Ryan Steinke starred with a goal and an assist. Ezer DeAlmeida added a goal and a number of great centering passes to teammates. Jackson Bryant also showed skilled, unselfish play with a goal and three assists. Speedy Zach Forbath doubled his usual output with a remarkable four goals, while Luke Bashore’s consistently strong play allowed him to score for the third consecutive game. In addition to almost bending in a corner kick for a goal, Tommy Kennedy constantly pounded the ball. Cole McCunniff was a star at midfield, creating several turnovers and supporting the great defense of Indiana Pullis and Chandler Airth. It was another great team effort for the Green Bullets.

Boys Under 7

Fighter Jets vs. Jets

Finn McClintock was on fire for the Fighter Jets, leading the team with three goals and a corner kick that also bounced in off the Jet goalie for a score. Also scoring for the Fighter Jets was Marcus Miller with an amazing shot from midfield. The Fighter Jet offense really controlled the ball for most of the game, with some long dribbles by McClintock, Miller, Aidan Gassel and Joseph Whelan. Richie Rimlinger also displayed impressive footwork, getting the ball loose and kicking it clear of the Jet defense several times. Jerome Snyder had some huge defensive kicks, and along with Kaiyo Freyder and Jake Nellesen did a perfect job protecting the Fighter Jet goal.

Red Rockets vs.

Green Gladiators

The match started off with a bang as both squads turned away multiple scoring attempts on both sides. Oliver Hobin, Luca and Carlo Curci, Charlie Jeffs and Vann Pronger made great defensive plays in the first and second quarters for the Red Rockets as John John Fay sent a solid right foot into the back of the Gladiators net for the only goal of the first half.

The second half began with a goal by Braeden Kassouf for the Green Gladiators followed shortly thereafter by a second goal by Dylan Li. Austin Stokes, Charlie Swanson, Billy Rankin, Chip Deegan and Peter Joslin all dribbled well keeping possession for their respective teams. Cameron Waterman, Jake Sinatra and Sam DiCarlo made great assists for the Gladiators.

Boys Under 5

Blue Flames battle

Wolverines

Morgan Pinckney and Mitchell Schott scored early. Big kicks by Jake Read helped keep up the momentum. Reade Decker produced a great steal.

Quinn Hatzis displayed skill in his play. Collin Heinrich and William Jacobsen provided great defense. Collin Heinrich and William Jacobsen also contributed. Mitchell Schott scored a great goal, while Kenny Wanlass supported wth hustle. Decker scored on an assist from Pinckney.

Slammers Girls

remain on top

The Slammers Maroon Girls U-11 soccer team maintained its position on top of the standings with a 2-1 win over Tustin United Soccer Club on Sunday at Irvine Terrace Park.

Kiana Ghamari found the back of the net early in the second half breaking a 0-0 tie. Shortly after the Ghamari goal Faith Harper took a thread pass from Siena Ward, beat the sweeper and buried a shot past the diving Tustin keeper. A third goal by Ghamari off a beautiful cross from Katrina Freiberger was nullified by an off-side call. The Slammers, who dominated possession the entire game, had stellar midfield play from Leah Givant, Katie Dosch, Emma Scott, Grace Jennings, Shelby Guerena and Freiberger. The stingy defense was led by keeper Destry Comp, center backs Jasi Dunk, Bella Goldstein and Grace Vandervort, and marking backs Jackie Singer and Paige Fults.

The win runs the Slammer league record to 4-0 outscoring the competition by a margin of 20-1.
