NEWPORT BEACH — In the third set of Newport Harbor High’s win over Laguna Beach Thursday night, Coach Dan Glenn provided a moment that showed a reason why the Sailors are so good.

The Newport Harbor coach in his 24th year keeps pushing his team. When the Sailors celebrated too early after a tip that was nearly dug and returned, Glenn bolted from his seat and told his girls to be aware before turning away from the action.

The Sailors lost that set, but returned to dominance for a 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14 nonleague win. Glenn appears to have another good team, this one actually looks special. The Sailors, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA, improved to 12-3 and continued to carry the momentum from this past weekend’s Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. That’s where Newport Harbor was runner-up, losing in the final to Archbishop Mitty, ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN RISE FAB 50. The Sailors are ranked No. 5.

But Glenn did not appear content after the win against Laguna Beach.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence,” he said. “But we still have a lot to work on.”

They’re also not the favorite in the Sunset League, he said. Los Alamitos is the defending league champ, he said.

Against the Breakers, the Sailors at times looked like champions. Senior Kirby Burnham led the way with 22 kills and 17 digs. Senior Katey Thompson had 13 kills and two blocks, while Mackenzie Campbell added 24 assists, four digs and two aces.
