Newport Harbor defeats

Laguna Beach

The Newport Harbor High surf team opened its season with a 98-70 win over Laguna Beach Tuesday morning at 56th Street.

The Sailors won six of the eight heats with five first-, seven second- and three third-place showings.

Led by heat winners sophomore Charlie Hawthorne, freshman Colin Moran, and seniors Jared Cassidy and Erik Heimstaedt, the team won each of the four heats and a combined score of 56-28 in the boys’ shortboard.

The girls’ shortboard team won, 12-9, led by second-place finisher sophomore Shelby Detmers and third-place finisher senior Kaleigh Gilchrist.

The bodyboard squad won its heat, 12-9, led by freshman Briggs Viloria.

Senior Austin Gilbert placed second in boys’ longboard.

Senior Elizabeth Eddy was second in girls’ longboard.
