Police DUI program receives state grant

The Newport Beach Police Department has been awarded a state grant to continue its specialized DUI enforcement for the next year, police officials announced Wednesday.

The California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded Newport Beach police a $182,000 grant for DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols and various stings.

Grant funds will pay for the overtime required to operate a DUI checkpoint, and pay for officers patrolling streets solely to find impaired drivers on busy nights, among other activities.

Police will now be able to conduct warrant searches and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders and stakeout local court houses to see if people with suspended drivers licenses actually drive there.

More than 11,700 people died last year in highway crashes involving a driver with a blood-alcohol content above .08, the legal limit in California, police said in a news release.
