Breakers settle for second

SAN CLEMENTE “” The Laguna Beach High girls’ golf team couldn’t have been too upset after losing a key Golden West League match Tuesday.

The music bumping out of senior Grace Komoroczy’s car, and the corresponding dancing Breakers, confirmed it.

Laguna Beach had done its best but fell to Estancia, 252-264, at Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club. The Eagles, who had beaten the Breakers by 10 strokes earlier in the league season, clinched the Golden West League title outright.

The teams won’t share the title like they had the previous two years.

Komoroczy was medalist, although she said she wasn’t particularly happy with her six-over par round of 42 on the Carnoustie course, which included four pars. Other players scoring for Laguna included Christianne Kinder (51), Taylor Weiss (56), Laura Kawashiri (57) and Jenni Coury (58).

And, despite the dancing, Komoroczy’s competitiveness also came out.

“I thought we were all pretty prepared for this,” Komoroczy said of the showdown against Estancia. “[The course] was a challenge to both teams. Estancia was lucky today. I think that we can beat them on any given day.”

Laguna Beach Coach Val Quigley said Weiss is getting over the flu and another Breakers golfer, Devin Altieri who shot 67, was sick.

But the dancing afterward didn’t surprise Quigley, either.

“They’re a great group of girls,” she said. “We’re a fun group.”

Estancia was led by senior Kim Haycraft, who fired a 45. Haycraft, along with Eagles junior Ashley Peters (48), are the Eagles’ best golfers.

But Estancia (18-2, 10-0) also has a deep team that extends to its junior varsity, Coach Art Perry said. He added that the Eagles knew Bella Collina was a tough course, having played a nonleague match against San Clemente there earlier in the season.

“I think we had a little bit more depth than [Laguna Beach] did,” Perry said.

Laguna Beach now prepares for the league finals, which begin Monday at El Prado Golf Course in Chino. Five golfers will advance to CIF, and Komoroczy will be a favorite to repeat as individual league champion.
