They’ve run some more heats at the Rip Curl Pro Search at Peniche, Portugal. In fact, last weekend, 20,000 surf hungry fans hiked a few miles to the beach break to see the tops in the world rip up the hollow 3- to 6-foot peaks.

The break is lined by steep cliffs in a natural arena-type setting and has had some offshore winds. There were a few upsets. In round one, San Clemente’s Chris Ward went down, and nine-time world champ Kelly Slater lost out by less than a half a point to wild-card Australian Owen Wright in round two.

It was a barrel-riding showdown with Wright getting the edge. San Clemente’s Pat Gudauskas, another wild card, won his first-round heat but was stopped by the points leader, Mick Fanning, in round two. Huntington Beach’s Timmy Reyes is finally having a bit of luck, blowing up in a few heats, and now meets up with the winner in Spain, Brazil’s Adriano De Souza. So Fanning is still No. 1, ahead of No. 2 Joel Parkinson and De Souza, who’s third in the standings. Other U.S. surfers advancing include C.J. and Damien Hobgood, Bobby Martinez and Dane Reynolds. We’ll keep you posted on more world tour action.

Sad to say goodbye to Huntington Beach’s legendary shaper Chris Hawk, who died late Friday after a battle with cancer. Hawk, known for his stylish surfing ability and killer shapes from the 1970s till present, will be missed by all the boys and gals who rode some of his magical surfboards. Hawk was just recently inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in front of Huntington Surf and Sport, leaving impressions of his hands and feet in cement and writing, “Peace — Love — Surf” in a touching ceremony attended by lots of his friends and family.

Huntington’s surf moviemaker, Timmy Turner, just got back from Vancouver Island, Canada, from another expedition to the wilds.

Turner and his buddy Eric “the Rammer” Ramsey did score a few days of good, gnarly 6- to 8-foot-plus freezing surf. Although on one session, Turner had a bad wipeout, landing on submerged rocks, which resulted in some broken ribs and a banged-up shoulder and cracked his surf helmet in half.

Needless to say, after that there was less surfing and more filming. They caught fresh fish daily and ate them, living in the survival mode. His first flick, “Second Thoughts,” was a hit. “Cold Thoughts” sounds like another good one!

Surf star Buddy Llamas, DJ Mark Moreno, and all-around nice guy Billy Webb are putting on a big Halloween bash at the new Shorebreak Hotel on Saturday night. Wear your best costume and head on down. Over and out.
